State Wetlands
Authority Approves Revised Coast 2050 Strategies
Revisions to the Coast 2050 strategies have been approved by the State
Wetlands Authority. This was the culmination of the revision process which
began in early 2000 at the request of members of the public who had been
using the Coast 2050 strategies for CWPPRA project nominations and had
found some areas where improvements could be made. During the development
of the 2050 Plan in 1997 and 1998, it was stated many times that the intent
was for the Plan to be a living document that would be modified as warranted.
So, this request was brought to the CWPPRA Technical Committee, who in
turn raised it to the CWPPRA Task Force. This suggestion to proceed with
the strategy revisions was unanimously approved by the Task Force on April
5, 2000.
More than 1,000 people were invited to attend the four Regional Planning
Team meetings to initiate the drafting of the amendments. After
these meetings were held, these recommendations were brought to a meeting
of the combined Strategic Working Group (SWG) and the Objective Working
Group (OWG). The SWG is comprised of the CWPPRA Technical Committee
and the State Wetlands Authority members, and the OWG is comprised of
the Coastal Parish Government Representatives or their local CZM Program
representatives. This was the same committee structure that was
used in the original drafting of the Coast 2050 Plan. At this joint
meeting, the final recommendations were drafted. These recommendations
were unanimously approved by the CWPPRA Task Force on January 10, 2001
and by the State Wetlands Authority on March 15, 2001.
